Romans 16:13 (NLT)
13 "Greet Rufus, whom the Lord picked out to be his very own; and also his dear mother, who has been a mother to me."
While I was studying my message for our Mother’s Day service, I ran across this scripture found in the Book of Romans. It talked about how Paul the Apostle referred to Rufus's mother as being like a mother to him. I know that I was looking to honor those that are like mothers to us. You know, the women who, even though they are not related to us, they are still very much like a mother nonetheless.
However, my curiosity got the best of me though about who this Rufus fellow was. Check out this scripture.
Mark 15:21 (ESV)
21 "And they compelled a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross."
Wow! I was really surprised to see that Rufus was one of the two boys that watched their father carry the cross up the hill of Golgotha for Jesus on the day that He was crucified. This is a personal letter that Paul is sending to his friends in Rome, and he points out to them to make a special greeting to Rufus and his mother, who is like a mother to him.
One minister said this, “Simon probably went home from that experience a changed man. And then he shared the power of that moment with his wife.” The day that I met Jesus, I mean really met Him, I was a changed man. Don’t get me wrong. I still make mistakes, but I am a changed man! Praise God
Father, I am grateful that one day You picked me out to be Your very own and You changed my life forever. Thank You for continuing to make me and mold me to be more like you, and more like the one who You desire for me to be in Jesus's name, Amen.
Blessings on the journey, and remember that the best is yet to come.
